O’Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba

The Founder and His Philosophy

Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969), often referred to as O-Sensei, meaning “Great Teacher.” Ueshiba was a highly skilled martial artist who believed that true strength comes not from defeating others, but from cultivating harmony within oneself and with the world.

His guiding idea was that martial arts should protect life, not destroy it. Ueshiba taught that conflict arises from imbalance and fear, and that by remaining centered and compassionate, we can transform aggression without hatred or domination.

One of his most famous teachings is:

“The purpose of Aikido is not to defeat an opponent, but to defeat the negativity within ourselves.”

In Aikido, techniques are practiced as a way to develop character, awareness, and respect — not as a means to win fights. The goal is personal growth, self-control, and peaceful resolution.
